NEW SPOTLIGHT ON NEWQUAY, CORNWALL

Just recieved this from newquays finest and must say, I took one look at their site and signed up fistral surf school to it as I think james will do really well providing potential visitors to Newquay, Cornwall with much needed information.

Newquay’s status as one of the world’s top surf centres is highlighted in an innovative new website just launched.

The surf section of www.newquaysfinest.co.uk includes local surf conditions and weather forecasts, webcam images refreshed every hour, events calendar and contest results, and a surfing gallery, with local photographers submitting new shots every month and website visitors invited to vote for the best.

The section also comprehensively introduces Cornwall’s specialist surf photographers, local surf schools and shops, surfboard shapers and repairers plus magazines.  The website’s visitors also have the chance to win a custom shaped Adams Surfboard.

The new website has been created by James Keith, head of local web design company Quick Hits.   Previously a marketing manager with a small Hampshire IT company, he moved to Newquay five years ago, drawn by its surf and Cornwall’s more appealing lifestyle.

A highlight of the website is James’ virtual tour of Newquay, which he claims has few if any equals among European resorts for its depth and quality.

He has combined cutting-edge software with his own photographic talent to create the 15-minute tour covering five miles, hailing “Virtual Newquay” as a revolutionary new way to explore the area. 

“‘Virtual Newquay’ provides visitors with the sort of clearer vision of the town that just wasn’t previously possible short of actually visiting the place,” he explains.

“With Newquay’s Finest, not only can you take a virtual tour of the coastline surrounding Newquay, but you can actually go into shops and businesses on the way.  Fortunately, we had some good days of sunshine when I was doing the photography earlier this year, so I’ve even laid on guaranteed sunshine for the virtual visitor!”

We have both enjoyed the clips and the music sounds fun, hopefully if happy feet and the reef are anything to go by then this should be a cracking film for young people and adults to enjoy together and hopefully get more people interested in surfing here in the Uk. The popular GSD junior surfing re-starting

Easter Holiday Surf Camp  2007 now taking bookings.

For young people runs during school holidays, Monday to Friday from 09.30 – 15.30. The cost is £30 for the day, all equipment is provided and coaching is by City and County of Swansea Advanced CRB certified instructors. Book places for the Gower surfing camp click here

AFTER SCHOOL SURF ACADEMY:  restarts on 16th April 2007 booking now. This operates Monday to Friday after school up until October half term, after which it will be operating on Saturday and Sunday mornings running up to December school holidays.

This surfing academy helps create confident individuals and gives the young people attending a skill for life. O’Neill Highland Open

The biggest surf event ever to be held in the UK.

For the first time a World Qualifying Series (WQS) surfing event of the highest rank will be coming to the UK.  Honoured to be hosting an event of this calibre, the UK will see the world’s best talent competing on British surf – for many competitors it will be the coldest climate in which they have ever surfed.  The O’Neill Highland Open will be held in Thurso on the North Coast of Scotland from the 24th April – 1st May 2007.

Thurso is on the very Northern tip of Scotland, projecting into the Atlantic Ocean.  The wind and swell from the Atlantic provide some of the world’s best surfing conditions, and waves to compete on an International level.

WQS surf events typically have a setting of blue sky and white sand.  To see surfers from all over the world on the Scottish Highlands, the contrast of tanned Brazilian, Hawaiian and Australian surfers against the back-drop of fields of sheep and traditional Scottish castles will provide an interesting and unique event with outstanding imagery.

An event was held last year as a trial run at the Scottish location, credited only as a 5 Star WQS event. As the most northerly and coldest event on the WQS tour it was an original event, with outstanding surf conditions and ‘huge’ waves.

O’Neill originated  from Northern California when they invented the wet suit in 1952, allowing surfers to continue their sport in cold water.  Going back to their roots, O’Neill are showing the true side of surfing through this unique core surfing event.

Swansea students have fun in Newquay

Here is a report from GSD's own Peter 'lord la la' Abell the captain and organiser of the Swansea Institutes surfing team in which 3 members are current staff of Surfgsd and Peter runs surf lessons for us down in Newquay, Cornwall   I asked him to write this report and all though brief it appears they all had fun and enjoyed the socializing which of course the BUSA event is famous for.  Please see Peter's report below and well done to Jo Denisson whom is in need of sponsorship to help her win more contests.

Plymouth won once again with Aberdeen taking 2nd place followed by swansea institute in 3rd place. Plymouths Ludovic Henry and swansea institutes Jo Denision took 1st pace in
the indivduals.

The surf was pumping on Friday with 4ft off shore waves marching into fistrals shores. The surf stuck around all weekend but the wind went onshore but was still surfable.

The institute has been in the top three places for the last 5yrs now and the team is looking stronger than ever. Obviously a bit of partying went on and we're blaming that on the reason we only came 3rd.

We were getting in from a night out as plymouth were doing pre surf yoga.
Maybe a change of tactics is in order for next year.As you all know its all
about having fun and fun was definatley had.The fact we did well was just a
bonus.

Micha joins Toby at Hot Tuna

Congratulations to Hot Tuna for recently signing up the current BPSA UK Champ Micah Lester to join buddy Toby Atkins on the European Hot Tuna Team.

This is a huge signing for Hot Tuna with Micah being arguably the best surfer in the country. His contest surfing is strong but his free surfing is even hotter. Look at any video part, notably Mr B’s Performing Monkeys and you will be blown away by his section!
