Currently the North Atlantic surf charts are showing 3 macking swells heading full steam to the best spots in Europe, I am sure that there will be some XXL rides over the next week possibly Ireland, Portugal or even Pais Basque... Interestingly even Kernow is going to take a beating due to the westerly direction of the storm systems with 2morrow arvo showing a long distance swell and building rapidly with southerly winds perfect for north coast action see you down there!

Newquay based Russell Winter wins this year’s North East Open

Russell Winter wins this year’s North East Open at Longsands Beach, Tynemouth. Newquay based former World Championship Tour surfer dominated the final with big powerful turns as he excelled in the Tynemouth surf conditions.

Russell commented “Again it has been a fantastic event; I have enjoyed coming to Tynemouth and competing and looking forward to returning next year. On behalf of all the competitors I would like to thank North Tyneside Council for supporting this event”.

Russ has now won the North East Open three years in a row. With this result he also returns back to the top of the leader board on the UK Pro Surf Tour 2011.

Finishing second was an inform French surfer Gordon Fontaine, who won the British University Championships the previous weekend for the third time. Equal third went to Luis Eyre and Tom Butler

In the Pro Junior division Luis Eyre took the honours in a very close fought heat. Second place went to current Pro Junior Tour Champion Stuart Campbell. Third and fourth went to the brothers Ed and Jak Smith from Liskeard.

The tour now moves on to the Relentless Super Series to be held at Lynmouth North Devon

Another exciting weekend is approaching with the London Surf Club coming to surf on Gower, student nationals & Wales in the rugby world cup semi finals

Well what an amazing weekend coming up, I saw a tweet stating that '...all the boring teams had gone home and now the fun would start..' well from what I have read Mike Tindall's extended stag do with his mates looked pretty exciting apart from the odd 80 minutes they were asked to have a run out of course, it all ended with a splash with the Samoan on the team doing what the coaching staff should have done in the mid atlantic.

Nevermind Wales are still in and playing well, the atmosphere in and around Wales is amazing with every man and his dog talking about rugby rather than jumping off ferries, hell, even number 10 Downing street is going to fly the Welsh flag on saturday, bet that makes Tindall's stag group feel good... fancy that a tory flying the Welsh flag!! (well done Mr Cameron)

As for surfing my hero Ke11y Slater got knocked out in the quarter finals of the Hossegor QuikPro by one of the new kids on the block 'Medina' from Brazil keep an eye out for him as on certain waves he looks unbeatable with his air displays.

Kelly will be back in waves that he thrives in this coming weekend with the hopefull start of the Peniche, 'Super Tubes' Rip Curl search event which will be live via a web feed and there is currently a cracking swell heading that way so really exciting for anyone like me that watches most heats of nearly every surf event webcast (apart from the New York event it was to painfull sorry!!)  pics of super tubes, Peniche  

With all the above going on there is also the London Surf club visit to Gower for intermediate surf coaching at Rhossili Bay then an hour at the LC Swansea indoor surf machine with us. Will get pictures and video footage of the event.

The guys probably chose Gower because this weekend the whole of Newquay is going to be over run with ramapant surf students competing in one of the largest surf events of the calender year. Swansea Uni and Swansea Met have strong teams so am hoping that they give a good account of themselves, will keep you posted on the results.

Half Term Holiday Surfing for kids with GSD, a licensed surf school here at Caswell Bay in Swansea. Open from 09.00 a.m and pick up by 15.30 we provide all the equipment and all our coaches are enhanced CRB certified. Elmo has a take away shop at the beach which provides hot drinks and food or you can bring a pack lunch.

The beach is usually quiet from now on and hopefully the surf will be bouncing for the young people to have fun in the safe environment of Caswell Bay

An exciting week ahead plus a bit of surf too for the surf school @ Caswell Bay, Swansea

The nice colours of last week have left us for now but we still have waves for surfing lessons at Caswell Bay, Swansea this week and great news all, the QuikPro has just started so if you have access to the internet you can tune in and watch some amazing surfing all week.

Which then leads us nicely up to a massive weekend, the rugby world cup is now entering the meat and veg stages with the first quarter final kicking off at 06.00 a.m on Saturday Wales v Ireland then France V England so even though the weather is pants there is plenty of things to keep you motivated for sure!

Then what next? Well the long range forecast is showing some exciting looking dart boards in the Atlantic for next week so all is good!   Happy Surfing...
