Following on from the success of the Aberavon Beach surf contest ran on behalf of the 5 X 60 team in Neath Port Talbot, GSD ran a second end of school term contest at Caswell Bay in 1-2 ft waves for the Swansea and Camarthanshire regions.
We would like to thank the following companies and charity for their contribution and must state that we are fairly shocked at the other surf industry members (including NGB) contacted, for their lack of support on what is a classic part of 'surfing development'.
It is unfortunate, that as with other sports, surfing spends to much money and time on the elite and not enough on the future at the base of the sports development pyramid. This of course is highlighted in Alex Wades (the surfing academic) > Surf nation book.
Anyway, big thanks to the 5 times 60 officers in South and West Wales for doing more for Welsh surfing development than any other body or organisation. I am pretty sure that within the decade it will stand Wales well in surfing events. Thank you to the RNLI, A1Surf and Circle 1 wetsuits helping to spread the stoke!
Bishopston Comp came first with two of their surfers coming 1st and 2nd in the individual event followed by Olchfa and then Gowerton. Stand out perfomances from young Will Poultney of Bishopston gave us all hope in the future of Welsh surfing !
The top three received a free surf coaching session, pics below of beach crowd and judges on the beach.
