Avoid the grid lock and travel by train, coach and some may choose the plane

Travel_by_train_great_western_train It has never been easier to leave your car at home and just jump on the train, more increasingly so groups are just hiring coaches or mini-buses and sharing the driving and costs. For smaller groups why not car pool?  Problems such as not having space for your surfboards or bikes are not a problem anymore as most of these products can be hired at your destination. I have noticed that national Express have their Glastonbury festival coach seats available now to on their website.  With the rising cost of fuel the time is right to keep an eye on those bargain deals offered by numerous websites that will get you to the coast cheaper and less stressed.

First surf session back.

Well what a nice surprise, expecting the worst I suited up with the very best xcell 6mm full singing and dancing wetsuit, 7mm xcell  mitts and to round it off 6 mm boots.

Now bare in mind my last surf was out at Rocky point on the North Shore in board shorts and blazing sunshine.  Here I was jumping into the Atlantic on a fantastic clean day with no wind and shoulder high waves on a Gower reef 30 minutes walk from the car.

Boom, splash my rather large body entered the murky water and... it was roasting, or rather I was roasting so hot that sweat was dripping down my forehead.  Unbelievable, the warmest I can ever remember a feb winter surf being.

The surf? Well that was fun, waves slower than the past month, but only sheep as company so all in all a very pleasant experience.

I feel I must thank the guys making these fantastic wetsuits and for surfline and magicseaweed for getting it spot on for today over a week ago !

Looking good for next week

The surf is looking really good for next week from late tuesday onwards at the moment. With conflicting size and period between surfline and magicseaweed at present. Never mind it will be much better than this past week of cold winds and flat seas to welcome me back from the North shore which of course is still pumping.  I purchased a copy of carve magazine yesterday and it gave me heart, seeing such lovely waves in full gloss and the main thing being they are British waves.

I found this picture and thought I would post it for you.

Bloggsd This is hopefully what I will be surfing in the next few weeks, if the conditions are worth travelling there for.  Looking forward to seeing Henrique and the boys in Joes bar.

Back home

NetcamJust got back, the long haul flight was harsh from Hawaii. Leaving pumping surf with a real large one looming to this. This is the latest picture of Langland beach on Gower from the boys at Gower live oh great. Murky and cold with no surf in sight. To cheer myself up have arranged for my next trip in just over 2 weeks time to the jewel of the atlantic (surf permitting) and been checking out prices of flights to Portugal for April and Mexico for June. Takes your mind off the ugly shots !  Good luck to Alex whom is heading up north to surf, now that is extreme.

I had a great time on the North shore caught up with old friends and made some new ones. Looking forward to next Jan 2008 now for my next taste of Hawaiian heavy water.

Surfers help needed for British surfing injury research.

AN INVESTIGATION OF ACUTE AND CHRONIC INJURIES SUSTAINED WHILST SURFING

Researcher.

Mike Murphy (38) is a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Rehabilitation through St Mary’s College, London. He is currently employed as a Clinical Exercise Therapist and Physical Training Instructor in the Royal Navy.

A keen surfer originating from Penzance, Cornwall, UK , Mike has previously worked as a lifeguard and taught Surfing, for a number of years. He is currently a Trainer and Assessor for the British Surfing Association

Introduction

There has been many investigations, into the most common types of injuries caused when, or by surfing, with lacerations and contusions having the highest regularity of incidence. Although injuries deemed as musculo-skeletal have a less common occurrence, they do require a longer period of rest, then post-injury rehabilitation to aid their recovery.

Aim.

The aim of this study, is to investigate common Acute ( < 6 weeks)) and Chronic ( > 6 weeks) musculo-skeletal injuries sustained when, or by surfing and to then create a database of injuries, to eventually identify any patterns or co-incidences, relative to lifestyle, weather, conditions, types of breaks and causes.

Once enough feedback has been received, it is intended to produce a detailed document of the findings, with methods of prevention by pre-activity preparations, post-injury rehabilitation exercise therapy in and out of the water, thus aiming to reduce incidences of injury.

Inclusion Criteria.

All surfing related musculo-skeletal injuries regardless of severity. These are: Bone, Ligament (sprains) , Tendon, Muscle, (Strains) Cartilage, Bursa, Synovial and degenerative diseases (Arthritis, etc) The degree of onset can be sudden (sharp muscle pull) or gradual such as Lower Back Pain.

Confidentiality.

All information received will be deemed ‘Medical in Confidence’ and names will not be publicised.

Well done British Surfing.

The following press item is from the British Surfing Association.  I am on a training course next week with Ben Skinner so will get an interview for this blog on where he is going from this fantastic result. Hopefully, the success will be built on in the future with the professional approach now taken by the BSA Level 4 surfing development schools located in Cornwall, one in Wales and abroad. Bethan Mason and Gwen Spurlock are good examples of  surfing development plans which in their case involved Tracy Boxall, SurfGSD 4 star surf school and the Gower Bays surf club.

BRITISH SURFER BRINGS HOME SILVER IN THE BEST RESULT IN OVER 40 YEARS!

The Freespirit British Surf Team had major cause for celebration in California last night after 21 year old Ben Skinner, originally from Jersey, came second in the world in the Longboarding section of the World Surfing Games. Ben impressed judges throughout the contest, the equivalent of the surfing Olympics, and his silver medal is the best result by a British surfer at the games for over 40 years.

Multitalented Ben, who is equally at home on a shortboard, powered through all of his heats last week and went straight into the final. He surfed amazingly well yesterday but was piped at the post by six time South African champion Matthew Moir who surfed a flawless heat hanging ten, cross stepping the board and kicking in big bottoms for the gold medal. In several media interviews before he went out to California, Ben was keen to stress that Britain is becoming a strong surfing nation to be reckoned with on a global platform, and he has more than proved his words with this stunning result.
Ben is also currently the British and English Longboard champion and represented Britain as a junior shortboarder in South Africa 2002.

Overall the British team also achieved their ambition of coming within the top ten nations in the world, taking ninth place out of 33 countries. Top surfers Alan Stokes and Sam Lamiroy made it into the quarter finals and Gemma Harris, a female bodyboarder from Wales, made it to the third round of the repercharge before being knocked out. Australia took the gold in the overall team result in one of the closest fought championships with Brazil, the USA and South Africa coming second, third and fourth.

National Director of the BSA Karen Walton said today, “This is the most amazing result both for Ben and for the team. We are all delighted beyond belief for him and so proud to see him up there on the podium. He is one of the most talented surfers this country has ever produced and his silver medal has done so much to consolidate our global reputation as a surfing nation. We can’t wait to give him a hero’s welcome on his return!”

Karen continued, “The entire team should also be congratulated on their efforts and they have all worked extremely hard to get us within the top ten. Scoring ninth out of 33 in the world is a stunning achievement for them all and I would also like to thank surfers across the UK who have been keeping the team going all week by sending messages of support which have been broadcast out across the beach. The next World Surf Games are in Portugal in 2008 and we’ll start planning for that soon.”

Adam Smith, Marketing Manager of Freespirit commented, “Without a doubt this is an awesome result for the British Surf Team and Freespirit is delighted to have been behind them all the way. We can’t wait to see everyone back on British soil and to celebrate Ben’s amazing achievement.”

A British judge, Joanne Hillman, was also given a major recognition for her judging commitment and skill throughout the event. Her average scoring was 92% and as a result she has been invited to judge at the next World Surfing Games in Portugal.

I love Hawaii, it's that simple. Every wave tests you and your ability. I truly believe that if one is to be a surfer he/she must travel to the home of surfing to sample it's delights at least once.
