I saw these surf pictures and just wanted to comment on them for you guys currently learning to surf or learning to become surf coaches. Don't forget that our Gower surfing lessons are open all year and our Fistral surf school sessions start again in May
The first picture shows the surfer in a good position having caught the wave, his hands are firmly planted below his shoulders and his back is arched, I would prefer it if he was looking ahead to ensure there is no one in his way.
The second picture shows the 'knees method' of standing up, the only problem here is that he has not brought his knees far enough forward which means that there is to much weight towards the back of the board and will cause the surfboard to slow down.
The third picture shows the front foot being brought forward and should ideally be planted at a 45 degree angle in the centre of the board below the chest and between the hands. The result of not placing the knees and front foot correctly is evident in this picture, the surfboard is unbalanced.
The fourth picture shows the golden rule of learning to surf being broken, the surfers hands being taken off the board to early with the result of losing balance and falling off. We call this the air traffic control signals.(Please click on pictures to see larger images.)
