As some of you may recall I mentioned on this blog and offered a few pictures to show that I had actually managed to stand up on a 'SUB' stand up board out in Maderia. With thanks to Capt mike the guru of surf he showed me the light and even though my first go I struggled mainly due to my bulk and the fact the board was 10 foot and I really needed to learn on a 12 ft SUB. Mike gave me great tuition and encouragement each time I fell in the water. I was hooked and determined to learn, I, like most people starting a new sport purchased the wrong board, even though I got a 12ft board as advised by the guru, it was a circle one board made in china and given a logo, way to heavy no rocker and to be avoided at all costs. I have since been using my mates SUB which is a Naish 11' 7' and also a third of the weight of the circle one and twice as thick.
Anyway after a few outings in smaller surf and on flat days for training, I am stoked to say that I am doing well and have since surfed waves on Gower that are difficult to surf normally. I love sup as it is great training for tow surfing and normal surfing building core fitness and strengthening my skinny surfers legs.
I am looking to buy a new SUB along with a carbon oar ready for this winters surf on some of those out of the way spots such as the Mixsons.
For more information checkout this cool site which also has videos etc on how to SUP perhaps before I bought my sub I should of did a bit more research, 'stand up paddle surfing uk'
We will be running stand up paddle surf events on Gower next April and in addition incorporating stand up paddle surfing into our surfing courses as an added etc for customers to say they have had a go, for more info on stand up paddle course click here and email us SUP Gower p.s does anyone want to buy the Circle one SUB off me?
