Snow boarding in La Plagne leaves us comfortably numb

Currently suffering from back to work blues after two weeks snowboarding in La Plagne, enjoying incredible conditions: La Plagne

Ski_la_plange_2008_041jpg Both weather and snow were awesome. The first Wednesday and last Tuesday are possibly the best conditions I have ever seen! This made being the only boarder in a group of skiers bearable. The debate for which is better will rage on for a long time! I have to confess to taking out a nice skiing lady (sorry again), which didn't help the greater cause.

La Plagne is a large and very scenic resort (if a little pricey). Eating out is expensive, but well worth it! By far my favorite restaurant, called "Restaurant", is tucked in behind the gondola station in Bellecotte. Their cod house dish is out of this world and well worth the trek to it!

La Plagne has a diverse amount of runs, many of which are not ideal for boarders. After a quick overnight waxing the numerous flat areas became less of an issue. Keeping enough speed to get past them proved more interesting! Skiers seemed hell bent on weaving around at a slow pace across my path or stopping in large packs to spite me. Large chunks of my time were spent waiting for big enough gaps to go uninterrupted or taking random lines and off piste sections just to avoid the skiers. It's definitely not a friendly place for beginner boarders. Of the resorts I have been I would say it is easily the worst for boarders, evident by the sheer lack of numbers compared to skiers. The large flat areas make for a lot of un-clipping if they are busy or if you'd lack the confidence to carry a lot of speed on to them! It's ok for the likes of Terry (skier) who makes his own space, but I struggled when it got busy and had to get closer to skiers than I would like.

Ski_la_plange_2008_074 The Glacier and the lower villages are well worth a trip and we had some of the most fun red and blue runs (these areas weren't that crowded)! The Glacier itself has some of the most stunning views (See left for Pete enjoying the scenery).

Apresski wasn't that apparent, but we didn't venture in to 1800 or Center in the evenings and the local bars charged a fiver a pint! At that rate it was never going to be rammed full of apreskiers/boarders. We did succeed in one night out in what we initially assumed was a gay bar, called "Le Saloon" (thankfully no one got a pic of me sitting on the bar saddle :D). In the end it turned out to be one of three regular "night clubs" in our area.

Big thanks to Terry (Red Leader) for organising the Trip, Pete (Red 5) for providing a good influence for pushing it and Chris (Rubber Duck) for ordering "Le Chicken Burger" and "proving" money can indeed buy happiness, donkeys and potentially Jon (and for the photos included in this blog).

Kitesurfing the Cape Verde Islands.

By Matt Smith of Gower Kite riding school.

 Kiteboarding in

Cape   Verde

If you like your islands raw and untouched and free from crowds they are your utopia!
10 islands in the chain some leeward, some windward so those NE Trades can really blow on the windward islands.

Sal is one of the most barren of the group of ten islands and five islets in the archipelago of Cabo Verde, 1500 km south of the Canaries Dakar SenegalAfricaand approximately 450km west of Senegal. Although Sal is very barren, there are few who don’t succumb and fall under its spell without plans to return.

We visited Sal and Boa vista and both seemed quite similar to the Canary islands of
Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, albeit more african and untouched, but time will tell before they are developed in the same fashion.

Sal has plenty of waves to surf on whether your a surfer or a kiteboarder, with Ponta Preta looking super hollow on our last day there, alas I had no surfboard, just my small dinner tray of a kiteboard, I was tempted to sponge it!

Boa vista was even more undisturbed than Sal although the cement churners and brick layers are starting to develop things now just like on Sal.

Boa has loads of surfing/kitesurfing potential as its basically a large beach island. Some of the spots however are really remote and can only be got to by 4x4. There are also plenty of Big fish swimming around and No decent hospital on the island as of yet! (October 06)

We Surfed two spots ‘Cabral beach’ and another wave which brakes in the channel between Sal rei (the capital) and a small offshore island. It has loads of potential and rumour has it Josh Angulo is inviting Laird Hamilton over to scope out the Tow in possibilities of one of the islands many offshore reefs in December.

Like any spot though it may not get the swell or the right conditions so take a fishing rod and catch your supper as there is not much else to do on the island if your not super keen on your watersports or the beach.

kiteboarding wise if your a beginner and not particurlary confident in cross offshore winds the flat water spot just off Sal rei is not great - with the wind coming over various isographics its gusty and the brazilian kiteschool owner 'Atila' will rub his hands in glee as he charges 30 euros for a rescue if you drifting into Tiger shark heaven! And not able to swim in.

There are however various spots on the East side of the island which are cross shore/cross onshore but like I said remote and a little spooky.

Santa Maria is a awesome place to KITE with the backdrop of a huge wreck behind you and nice waves and flat spot lagoons in between sets.

Flat water spots are far and few depending on the swell, I took a 135 and a wave board which covered me fine for the conditions.

Cape verde is not as cheap as you think its going to be, as they have to import everything. However in November ASTREUS will fly direct from the UK offering a cheaper flight than your usual lisbon stop-over and therefore bring things into a more comfortable price bracket.

True Potential and Other activities

Deep sea fishing and boat trips: Grouper and yellow fin tuna are plentiful inshore off Sal and Boa Vista and further out marlin, wahoo, barracuda and tiger shark can be caught in

Cape Verde

waters. Bookable through many hotels or wander down to the pier and book there for as little as €35 for three hour trip on a catamaran and if you’re lucky you’ll come across some dolphins.

Marine turtles: The turtle is the national symbol of Sal, and every year, from late May to September, more than 3,000 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) come ashore on s beaches, with Salinas

Diving: Diving in crystal-clear warm

Cape Verde

water reveals brilliantly coloured reef fish and there are three wrecks off

Santa   Maria

(Sal) at 10m to explore

The other islands also apparently have good surfing and kiting spots especially the island of st Vincent.

If your thinking of checking them out give us a mail and we'd be more than happy to reccomend accomdation etc
Until then keep dreaming of White sand beaches and empty waves

GKR kite surfing news.

GKR The Kitesurfing school here in the Uk.

Gower kite riders was set up by matt barker smith who has had 12 years of surfing experience and after tasting what the world had to offer in waves decided to broaden his watersport skills and learn to kitesurf.

First introduced to it in Sydney and then later in the surf retail trade. "I remember getting lofted 20ft with my mate holding onto the back of my harness needless to say if he hadn't held on I would have been double that ,so I thought I better get some lessons through an instructor"

Once he had learnt and improved his edging and riding skills matt took the national instructor course and set up GKR

"Learning to kitesurf does have its risks but with instruction from a qualified instructor you learn all the things not to do first therefore eliminating dangerous accidents like i had."

It's such a awesome sport I have trouble deciding whether to kitesurf or surf somedays.kiteboarding as it's also called is all about personal expression whether you want to perform aerial twists and jumps or go back to the sports surfing roots and wave ride.

Traction kites are perfect for honing the kite skills needed to learn to kiteboard (of which 80% is kite flying skills).

The board skills come in later if you surf, wakeboard or snowboard that will all help in your development as its a sport you will learn fast. Its a ultimate non stop buzz of adrenaline which will have you hooked from the first time you fly a powerkite.

Learn all the skills needed to become a Independant kiteboarder with Gower Kite Riders Kiteschool a fully aproved British kitesurfing association (BKSA) and International Kiteboarding organisation (IKO) school on the beautiful coastline of the gower peninsula.

New ATB Centre for Gower South west wales.

GSD to start Mountain Board Centre in 2007.

Opening in April 2007, run by GSD as a means to keep that surfing feeling going even when it is flat !

Dirt boarding or ATB (all terrain boarding) is a great way to help improve basic skills such as turning and body dynamics.

More information will follow shortly including dirt board course information, mountain boarding school opening times, dirt boarding equipment including pads etc for this extreme sport.

What is mountain boarding ?

Mountain boarding, also known as dirtboarding, is a new board sport, derived from snowboarding. It was originally intended to take the place of snowboarding during warm months while there was no snow available. It was only in the last 4 or 5 years that mountain boarding has developed into a sport in its own right.

Board description

A Typical Mountainboard A mountain board is similar to an oversized skateboard. The size of the deck is shorter than the average snowboard, approximately 100 cm in length with either three or four wheels. The wheels consist of small plastic hubs with tyres of between 8" and 12" diameter. The wheel size varies depending on which type of riding is done. For example, an 8" wheel would be for freestyle riding and jumping. The larger wheel is used by the downhill rider. Like a snowboard (and unlike a skateboard) the feet of the rider are attached to the board deck with bindings, however boots are not required. Most mountain boards these days also have 'channel trucks' which are a little like skateboard trucks but are spring-loaded to stiffen up turning. However skate style trucks are still popular for beginners boards and freestyle.

Riding styles
The two main styles of riding are downhill (either boarderX or freeride) and freestyle. Freeride is done on a variety of terrain, from ski resorts, when the snow has melted away, to downhill mountain bike courses, to woodlands and forests. More and more dedicated centres are being opened around the world specifically for the sport of mountain boarding. Racing tends to be either of slalom, two riders weaving between poles, or boarder cross, a category of racing that is similar to BMX courses, with berms and jumps.

Freestyle riding consists of ramp jumping; performing tricks which can be rotations (180, 360 and more degree turns), inverted tricks (back flips, front flips), and board grabs (tail grab and front grab).

A variation of mountain boarding is known as kiteboarding. This involves using a power kite to pull the rider on a mountain board and gives them the ability to use the kite to generate enough power to get some lift, normally several feet up in the air.

History
Rick Wilson of San Diego, California invented the first wheels used for mountain/dirtboarding in the early 1990's. Rick's wheels, known as "XT Wheels", were composed of a plastic core with rubber tractor tire style tread. The wheels were typically mounted on standard skateboards. Early dirtboarders customized longboards (about 36") using uncut skateboard decks from Vision Skateboards and configured them with 215 mm Independent trucks and German sealed bearings. Sky Hooks where often used for bindings facilitating increased control with the ability to quickly change stance.
